Types of lithium-ion batteries There seems to be some confusion regarding what it means when an article says Lithium Ion batteries are here to stay. For exampe, JRA quoted the following line from an article: "Analysts don’t anticipate a move away from lithium-ion batteries any time soon."
His statement is most certainly correct, we are not moving away from Lithium-ion batteries soon. However, there are many types of lithium-ion batteries as seen in the picture below. What we are experiencing within the lithium-ion chemestries howver is a shift away from those that need Cobalt. As I mentioned previously, the largest and most successfull car makers have chemestries with zero cobalt. Tesla has low-cobalt batteries now, but are pushing LFP in Europe and now in the US as well; and when they switchover to 4860, well game over. Then there is Buffet's company who is the number one car maker in China, and they are LFP as well, no cobalt. So while lithium-ion batteries in EV's will be around until the transition to solid state takes place (expected between 2025 - 2030), the question WHAT types of chemistries.
