I knew a caretaker, it was his occupation. He introduced me to the "Caretaker's Gazette" back before the internet took off. There is a whole class of people who do this for a living. I dont know how many would want to live in that part of Ontario, but the cheapest route would be to find a local who already lives there full time. When i lived in the high country of Colorado, we had lots of caretakers, most paid with a free room during tourist season or free food at the lodge restaurant. There are lots of ways to compensate a caretaker.
