RE:Who Really Believes in Nuclear Power
RE:Who Really Believes in Nuclear PowerThe problem with Nuclear Power is the people in the know ie the Nuclear engineers, physicists and Utility managers have lousy PR. The anti nuclear groups really have a lousy knowledge of the industry . I’m sure 99% of them don’t know the difference between a prompt neutron and a delayed neutron or the difference between fissile, fissionable and fertile elements. BUT they have great public relations. Nuclear Reactors have been around since the Second World War. Our expertise in operating ,building them has vastly improved over the last 80 years. Half of a nuclear unit ,the steam turbine is virtually identical to that in a fossil plant. The other big lie is how expensive they are to build. If we went into Nuclear like we went into renewables (mass production of reactors) prices would come way down. Chinese costs of building nuclear plants is pretty cheap. The costs of building one here and one there is expensive especially since there all prototypes . The other quasi lie is the storage of the highly radioactive spent fuel. After 10 years of being stored in a pool it loses about 99:999% of its radioactivity and half of the radioactive elements left is recoverable fuel. Also at this point it can be dry stored. Most of the American and European reactors were built in the 70s and 80s after the OPEC oil crisis. We need to build new ones now, the life span of a modern nuclear unit is 60 to 100 years. The public needs to understand this technology and the world leaders need to get together select the best designs and build thousands of identical units. It really is the answer to global warming.
