my father performed the first successful lung transplantSeptember 29th, 1965
Dr Darrell Munro.
Montreal Chest Hospital.
He was the Chief of Surgery, the Director of Professional Services, and the acting General manager.
He did it two years before Dr Barnard did his heart transplant thing in South Africa.
My dad's patient lived for 2 days, but they considered it succesful because he didn't need an iron lung.
He was able to breathe on his own.
Back then, they didn't have anti-rejection drugs.
The patient had volunteered.
He was going to pass within weeks anyway.
My dad always said that inevitably there would come a time that hospitals have wouldn't have enough oxygen supply to meet their needs
