People are not aware that most of the big Saudi oil fields (Ghawar included) were discovered in the 1940's and 1950's and have been on water-flood for decades. Even with the next step- tertiary techniques- they can't last forever. This is why new investment money was so important but I think that ship has sailed. You have to pay the piper.
