I am not laughing. I have seen the parallels for some time, ever since visiting Yad Vashem in Jerusalem shortly after the GFC and noting the economic parallels with the rise of Nazism. Thank goodness economic and political leaders at the time took the necessary steps to avoid a global depression. Politics around the world are now in a precarious state, with several populist leaders gaining power on the back of toxic nationalist and xenophobic narratives - and China, in the grip of an absolute dictator, gaining enormous economic, military and diplomatic power.
We live in a scary world.
