Driving is out (they dont have a car, no rental company will allow them to cross, and no 3rd party will take them across). Lastly walking is not possible because the border they are closest to does not permit pedestrian traffic.

Whoever told them that didn't know what they were talking about. As long as they took PCR or NAAT tests, and filled out the ArriveCan ap properly, they can cross the border, positive or negative.
