The Berbice River system used to drain most of northern South America until the South American plate run up agsinst the Nazca plate changing the flow pattern and creating the Amazon River system.
Maybe some experts would care to comment if the above is true. If it is then what we have in the Guyana basin are sedimentary deposits that can form many types of traps. Oil_Run talked about 3 types. Reading Exxon info they're talking about possible "carbonate traps". Would that be ancient coral reefs? I guess that the turbidite fan structures are the most prolific.
