How Shorts Make Money?

How Shorts Make Money?Curious if anyone here has a good understanding of how shorting works in these types of situations? We know that recently the short interest went up to tens of millions after the PP. Considering the push down from a recent high of 1.97 to where we are today, would it be safe to assume that its the shorts manipulating the price down so that they make their money? If so, how long do they need to keep the share price down to cash out with a nice sum? Would this also be tied to options expiry which I believe happens on Fridays each week? I just don't know enough about how shorting works to understand when we could see a bounce back in share price once the shorts are satisfied with their fill of profits. I think as a short it would be quite risky to keep this going for longer than a week or two as news of a permit or partner could come at any moment.
