I do hear what you are saying but it's possible that he thought he was staying for the next year or two but he woke up one day and he thought I just can't do this anymore.
It alll depends on how you intrepret "After consulting with the board of directors, we have agreed that a new President and Chief Executive Officer should lead the Company in its next chapter."
To me this sounds like he went to them and had to work to convince them the company was in good shape for him to go.
Or it could be darker?
In the end , does it matter?
