RE:Brookfield sees 'truly massive' opportunity in energy shiftThe signature line in this article is:
The transition from old to new energy forms has investors everywhere placing bets on which technologies will emerge as the dominant power forms in an era dedicated to eliminating hydrocarbons and fighting global warming.
Future renewable energy will be from Renewable Electricity or Renewable Hydrocarbons. It will be impossible (and stupid) to try to eliminate all hydrocarbons. They presently provide 88% of the world's total energy. Absolutely decrease use of diesel as quickly as possible--it is by far the most polluting hydrocarbon, especially in Class 8 Heavy Duty Trucks. However, RNG is THE Renewable Hydrocarbon of the future. The other renewable hydrocarbon, Green Hydrogen, can be produced more economically with steam methanation using RNG than it can with electrolysis of water using Renewable Electricity.
It will be many years before the infrastructure can be developed for energy conversion to Renewable Electricity. 60% of the electricity now produced from natural gas and coal would have be be produced from wind/solar/hydro. The transmission lines to get the electricity from the Renewable Farm to the cities aren't built yet. And the plan is to add the energy needs of transportation to that electrical grid? How? And as a bonus you produce Green Hydrogen from that Renewable Electricity and somehow build the infrastructure to transport hydrogen from the Renewable Farm to the enduser of hydrogen? How?
The beauty of RNG is that it is abolutely renewable as long as organic waste is produced. That waste is produced 24/7 with no need for wind or sunshine. RNG can be mixed in any percentage with existing fossil natural gas production and transported in the existing natural gas pipelines. The percentage of RNG can be incrementally increased as RNG production ramps up, decreasing the need for fossil natural gas. Produce Green Hydrogen by sending the RNG in existing infrastructure to the on site HyGear unit located on site for the filling station or industrial user of hydrogen. Would only need new hydrogen'-safe pipelines for the very short transport of the hydrogen from the HyGear unit to the filling pumps.or industrial user of hydrogen.
It is not necessary to elminate hydrocarbons to fight global warming. In fact, the production of RNG is the fastest way to decrease carbon due to the capture of biogas from the organic waste sites in the production of RNG. Used in transportation, RNG is much more environmentally friendly than total electricity when you add the carbon cost of mining lithium, manufacture and disposal of batteries, using coal and natural gas to produce the electricity: there will NOT be enough Renewable Electricity to replace fossil fuel generated electricity for YEARS!! Not to mention a whole new industry to produce, maintain, and repair electrical engines. RNG and potentially hydrogen as fuel in existing Internal Combustion engines is not pie in the sky stuff. It's being done very successfully today all over the world. IF Biostream turns out to be the most economical way to produce RNG. And IF HyGEAR becomes the most economical way to produce Green Hydrogen. We are riding the right horse. It's not Rocket Science.
