Three sleeping cabins delivered Friday to Portsmouth Olympic Harbour

The first three sleeping cabins were delivered to Portsmouth Olympic Harbour on Friday.

The cabins are expected to be a warm place in the winter for some of Kingston’s most vulnerable citizens.

The 12-by-eight-foot tiny cabins are manufactured by EnerDynamic Hybrid Technologies of Niagara Falls and cost about $16,000 each.

The city will own the cabins and Our Livable Solutions will manage them.

There’s enough room in the cabin for a single bed, dresser, small chair and TV table.

The cabins have been tested in the Arctic for their insulation and feature a fibreglass shell on the inside and outside walls.

The walls are almost impossible to damage and the cabin is fireproof, Chrystal Wilson of Our Livable Solutions said.

“If someone punches the walls, they’re going to hurt themselves,” she said.

Three more cabins are expected to be delivered next week and four more in early January.

The first people living in the sleeping cabins will be those with accessibility challenges, Wilson said.

“People with mobility challenges, circulation trouble and people who would be highly vulnerable during the winter and more susceptible to frostbite or health problems,” she said.

Bar53, which is busy during the summer and especially busy during the CORK sailing events, has been temporarily retrofitted to support those in the cabins. Our Livable Solutions will have staff on the site 24-7.

People in the homes will have access to washroom facilities and showers inside the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour building.

People are expected to move into the cabins around the new year once insurance issues are resolved Wilson said.
