RE:Ursula v der Leyen devides Europe
RE:Ursula v der Leyen devides EuropeThis whole notion that nuclear waste is a problem is a redherring.
If we all rode bicycles and used sailing ships to travel between continents I could see their argument. But the reality of the modern world is that we NEED energy. And as more of the world comes up to the standard of living in the First World, the world will need MORE energy.
Since humans learned to tame fire and started clearing the land for firewood and agriculture (and city building etc), we have been adding to the CO2 in the atmosphere and reducing the CO2 capture systems we inherited. With the coming of the Industrial Revolution in the mid 1800's this was accelerated. Until the second half of the 20th Century this still wasn't a huge issue because so much of the world's population was still riding bicycles and living on their farms. We, in the First World, were the elite. We could enjoy the lavish energy hogging lifestyle because we were the top of the heap... and f@ck everyone else.
At least we KNOW WHERE THE NUCLEAR WASTE IS and can contain it somewhere. ALL of the nuclear waste EVER produced would cover a football pitch a metre deep. The billions of tons of CO2 is out there in the atmosphere and it will take centuries for the balance to come back (if ever). We have been spewing it into our precious skim coat of gases as if the volume of the atmosphere was limitless. Well it's not. And no number of windmills and solar panels (which take heavy industry to produce) will supply the power density needed to remove the carbon spewing energy generation system we have right now.
WE NEED NUCLEAR...... or a magic wand. ;)
I know I'm preaching to the converted.....
