Questions about tailings

Questions about tailingsCurious to better understand:
1. Do tailings have to be 'turned over' using some sort of soil tiller in order to keep carbon sequestration going?
2. Can tailings be used for any other product(s)? Anything
3. I understand that top rock layer that has to be removed can also capture carbon. I assume that requires grinding but I question whether that's worth the effort?
4. Where are tailings stored in general? Just a huge pile next to the mine or being put back to 'fill the holes'

Thanks for answering my high school' questions.  ;-)
