RE:RE:RE:Hey Boys & Girls Post in EnglishSince as you write, this site is an english one, I think that the correct thing to do is to write in english, or at the very least try to.
The same argument could be used with the province of Quebec. Since Quebec is a french speaking province, the correct thing to do if you are a long time resident whose mother tongue is not french, is to learn to speak in french, or at least try to, when you meet french speaking people. We will appreciate the gesture and if we see you have problems with the language, we will switch to english gladly, just like July said in her post.
The irritation we can feel about this language saga is well illustrated by the recent speech of the new CEO of Air Canada who bragged that he could live in Montreal for so many years without having to speak french. He almost sounded like some king of afrikaneer of another era talking about not having to waste time learning the language of the natives.
We can make the difference between an english speaking tourist or student who are here for a short time and cannot speak french and a permanent resident of many years if not decades that cannot or will not speak french. We will certainly try to accomodate the visitors, but we have a harder time to do the same with the others.
