80 kg Cu in EV battery
80 kg Cu in EV batteryBMO Wood Mackenzie expect end-use copper demand from passenger EVs (including hybrids) to increase exponentially to around 2.9Mt over the next decade from ~0.6Mt in 2021. Of the 80kg of copper typically consumed in a battery EV, ~38kg is in the battery which uses copper in the form of foil as the anode material with a small amount as interconnects. Due to its thinness, conformity and light weight, electrodeposited (ED) copper foil is deemed the most suitable for battery applications. This has led to a surge in newly announced ED copper foil manufacturing capacity, with ~1Mtpa announced in 2021 and due to be commissioned over the next 5-7 years.
