Gumshoe has nothing to do with chewing gum stuck on your shoe.

During the late 19th century, gumshoes or gums were any type of rubber-soled shoes. Detectives were referred to as Gumshoes because they wore shoes with soft rubber soles to protect their feet. Back then, Detective work involved a lot of walking so they were known to use a particular shoe.
