The materials sector, which includes precious and base metals miners and fertilizer companies, added 1.5% as gold prices firmed above the key $1,800 (USD)-level and copper prices rose. Tech stocks have been some of the most volatile in recent weeks and investors expect faster interest rate hikes from central banks to curb inflation. Chinese markets were closed for the New Year holiday.
