Hey “G1945V”,
The “Calculated # Covered” is just that, it is a calculation of the shorts covered based on the information that is provided at
Short Sale Trading Statistics and Reports. There is no “official” place to get the short covered information, at least not that I am aware of.
Twice a month IIROC provides updates on the
volume of short trades for the periods 1
st->15
th & 16
th -> last day of the month and the
short position as at the 15
th & the last day of the month. The volume numbers are usually available on the first trading day after the 15
th and the short position numbers usually take ~5 trading days to show up.
For years I have posted the two tables updated with information provided from the above website but to satisfy my curiosity I had set up a spreadsheet which calculated the covered shorts during the period.
At some point in 2021 I started posting that table.
The reported short position as of Jan 31
st was 59,060
The volume of short trades Feb 1
st -15
th was
381,000 Sub total 440,060
The reported short position as of Feb 15
th was
217,601 “Calculated # covered” 222,459
***** I am guessing that you are asking for one of the following reasons:
1/ I have made
another math mistake
;<) 2/ You noticed a few negative numbers showing up in the Calculated # Covered column.
In regards to 1/ above – yes, I make mistakes and it’s great if someone checks my math and corrects me on this board.
Regarding 2/above – question is how can you have a negative # of shorts covered, pretty sure you can’t.
But that’s the number that falls out of the information provided in the two reports at the above website. The first line on that page is
“The Short Sale Trading Statistics Summary Report prepared by IIROC shows the aggregate proportion of short selling in the total trading activity of a particular security, based on data for trades marked “short sale” supplied to IIROC by each marketplace monitored by IIROC.” IIROC does provide a “Corrections” report but I rarely see any corrections for NSP.
I suspect that it happens due to clerical errors/poor reporting
to IIROC and/or
at IIROC. I have no other explanation.
