Russia and US can push and pull each other, but Russia needs to sell its oil and gas and the US needs that oil and gas in the market.
What we are seeing however is a portend of what is to come - not from this Ukraine situation, but from the point of view of conflict over resources.
Imagine if Russia responded by cutting off all oil and gas sales to Europe and the US, or anyone who does business with them. Thats the sort of thing that would lead to an invasion to get the oil / gas. Russia is too powerful to invade, but other places arn't
When there is not enough oil to go around, someone goes without. IF that someone has an army, they may decide to use it to make someone else go without.
Luckily Canada is linked at the hip to the US, otherwise it would be an easy target for invasion. Canada is the world's 4th biggest oil producer, and no army to protect that resource.
