ArcelorMittal mining operates a two line travelling grate pellet plant in Port Cartier, just a short drive down the road from where I live. This is Quebec therefore there are a lot of politics around this operation.
First: the operators are sharp. They have been constantly tweaking the process and the equipment to the point that it produces twice the name plate rating.
Second: Local politicians want to promote bio-diesel. There is a plant to produce bio-diesel from wood waste already built but not in service because the forestry operation that was to provide the wood waste is not in operation. The plant experienced cost overruns and some start-up problems and now is idle waiting for the supply issue to be solved. Bi-diesel is looked upon as a fuel for the pellet plant.
