Personally I'm not against stock buy backs when they are balanced and moderate.
Reason is when a company does a private placement to fund an acquisition, they are paying 6% forever unless they have a buy back program. And we know that PPL has some big expansion plans coming up that will cost billions. It is likely they will turn the DRIP back on provide ongoing financing. So any stock buybacks create room to do the DRIP or a private placement in the future while moderating the dilution to shareholders.
For me the key is a balanced approach. Funding maintenance, capital projects, paying down debt and being purdent with the number of shares outstanding is a winning combination.
