Numerous ways.. profit per share, putting a floor under the selling, which in turn forces buyers to buy at higher prices, adds competition to the buy side which in turn increases share price, which is fundamental to the NPV of the company, which in turn enables better financing metrics and possible equity raises.. after all the price of the shares, is the company's currency, in the case of a share offer in an acquisition.. those are off the top of my head.. ;-)
