Extreme weather may be in store for copper producing region
Extreme weather may be in store for copper producing region of southern Africa this year.
"Torrential rainfall and increased risk of landslides over the region during this period often results in widespread destruction and loss of life.[21][22][23][24]

It is expected that the Western Indian ocean will warm at accelerated rates due to climate change [25][26] leading to an increasing occurrence of positive IODs.[27] This is likely to result in the increasing intensity of rainfall during the short rain period over East Africa.[28]"

“As Andrew Watkins, head of long-range forecasts at the Bureau of Meteorology explained, the normal cycle for a La Nia is for it to break down during autumn. Things seemed to be on track this year until the trade winds strengthened a few weeks ago.
"That strengthening of the trade winds has gone and caused a cooling of the surface in the tropical Pacific and so we've seen some of the numbers go back down into La Nia territory," he said.
The news comes as the tropical climate driver, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), swings around to provide another tropical kick in the coming weeks.”

As best I understand it, the trade winds that power the movement of warm water from west to east have unexpectedly increased, causing floods in Northern Australia and also the possibility of flooding and cyclonic weather in East Africa this Spring. East African weather is a product of the Indian Ocean Dipole which is a separate cycle, but one that can be influenced by ENSO. Because of the difference in size of the two oceans what happens in the Indian Ocean has no appreciable effect upon ENSO.
