So yeah, if you use past history as a predictor of the future you would, mostly, choose GDX over EDV. For me, history has a pretty mixed record as predictor, but in this case of GDX vs EDV it is certainly much easier to just buy all the gold companies (GDX) , than to try and figure out the best ones to buy.
