Enzo DiMatteo A sewage-stew of greed, imbicility, hubris, egomania, and overall cluelessness has marked the short, unhappy life of Media Central. This has resulted in much hilarity for those of us who openly giggle at observing events such as a drunk looking for his lost car-keys. However, there's another very different side to all this comic mayhem, and that is illustrated by a 33-year editorial employee of NOW Toronto having just split the scene.
Enzo DiMatteo was the last political reporter employed by NOW. His byline was carried in thousands of editions, and he did some consequential work in community journalism. I can't say I was a fan of DiMatteo's style, which was on occasion insufferably doctrinaire and unnuanced. His reporting was nonetheless the very heart of NOW for four decades, and his absence from local media will leave Toronto less informed, and less well served by its remaining press outlets.
This transition will be a test of resilience for DiMatteo, but he seems like a tough nut, and the opportunities are out there in digital media and teaching. I'd love to read his book-length account of his time at NOW, right up to and including these strange, sloppy final days. He paid his dues, went the distance, and he has earned every right to a happy and prosperous future. I can't say the same of greedheads and retardates such as Uncle Kirk, or the jackels at CEO.ca/FLYY who actually expected to profit from their investment in the Media Central freakshow.
