RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:Suspicious
Remember Liz?
Liz struggled with diabetes most of her life. Eventually also her kidneys gave up and she needed dialysis. Instead, she received a living donor kidney transplant 5 years ago.
However afterwards, her blood glucose control was even more challenging and her HbA1c increased above 10.
Exactly a year ago, Liz received a single islet transplant and now she celebrates her first year living off insulin with HbA1c of 5.5!
Also her dogs, Whitley and Reuben are happier than ever.
For patients like Liz who need to take daily immunosuppression medication to protect their kidney transplant anyway, islet transplantation brings the pure benefit of an insulin free life.
There are many patients with T1DM in the US, who have received kidney, heart or lung transplants and could have enjoyed life without insulin after islet transplantation just like Liz.
Unfortunately, islet transplantation is still not broadly available to patients with diabetes in the US, despite it's being approved and reimbursable procedure in Canada, Australia, Japan and several Europeans countries.
In those countries, islets are regulated as any other organ/tissue for transplantation. By contrast, the FDA regulates islets as drugs, compromising patient safety and creating bureaucratic barrier for the approval of islet transplantation as a standard of care in the US. Unfortunately, our call for the regulatory update remains unanswered (www.isletsforus.org
