RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:Know your company

RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:Know your companyQuest,

I have a very large core position that I'm holding (forced to hold) and I swing trade a good chunk of shares when possible and the volume permits. Mostly on or pre-news sells and buy back on dips.

If you have a long investment horizon and understand the risks, I think you'll be in good shape. I emphasize the negative because it is never discussed by anyone other than me and a couple other investors.  What concerns me are things like comments from management valuing themselves at a billion more with the Evotec deal and comparing themselves to Vertex/Semma. Vertex outright bought Semma. We only have a licensing agreement with Evotec and don't own any of the IP. We also will have to pay them to use their cells. I haven't read the agreement to know exactly how much goes to each party but I can assure you that the licensing deal is not worth a billion dollars to Sernova right now (maybe after potential successful clinical trials).

Like I've said a million times, I think this play has room for potential returns but it is still a risky investment until the clinical trial with Evotec & Conformal coated cells is underway and shows efficacy which in my opinion is still quite some time away and lots can happen in that kind of time. As this space heats up and more money is invested in regenerative medicine & cell therapy, it could bode well for SVA or for the competition. Competition that is alraedy ahead of SVA in terms of official clinical trial data.

I actually agree with you in general!

But the situation is that you are referring to the fact that this is a speculative investment with what could be a very high payoff investment and emphasising the negative.

I have been following this for a number of years. I have also followed your advice (to a certain extent) in that I have sold some at higher prices and repurchased slightly more volume at a lower price when possible. I have done this in one of my Registered Income Funds (RRSP's converted as reuired when I reached 72 years of age). This has the advantage that I do not pay tax on the increases in value in my RIF until I move the funds out of RIF.

I do not sell and replace at lower prices in my tax paying accounts as I do not want to pay tax before I have to.

In general I am a buy and hold investor who remembers how much tax I paid on my most successful  investment where I gained a fair amount but only 25% what I could have gained if i had held the original number of years before the "Buy Bye" occurred. It was worthwhile although i remember how much more significant the profit would have been if I had not sold when i did. The sale partway through the investment life cycle was of ocourse worth it since i used the funds from sale to pay for substantial costs of education, through post garduate levels, of my children and housing for my family in general.

By the way i just would like to ask if you are a, buy and trade a portion of your holdings, type of investror. I get the feeling from your posts that you feel it is worthwhile to sell and lower your holdings and then repurchase if you can time the market and pay tax along the way.
