hmmm

These concepts (EM induction and Maxwell's Equations) are used to target the conductors associated with unconformity uranium deposits in the Athbasca Basin. I remember surveying over what would become McArthur River in the 1980's. These conductors are at great depth... about 600 metres, or a bit deeper than the CN tower is tall.  They then poke a rotating steel rod with a diamond bit at the fuzzy conductor down from that distance in an effort to find some uranium mineralization. These drill holes wander all over the place and it takes VERY experienced drillers to keep the hole more or less going in the desired direction. At first you just get sniffs of alteration (and uranium if you are really lucky), but successive (and expensive) drilling leads the smart geologist to the orebody.

McArthur River is actually several ore bodies, which were really only well defined by drilling from underground drilling from an exploratory shaft and drifts. VERY EXPENSIVE. In the end the orebodies were found to be about the size of a deep olympic swimming pool. Remember, you are trying to find these standing at the top of the CN tower.

It's simply amazing that these ore bodies were ever discovered.

Some bullboard members cr@p on the UEX exploration team for not coming up with the big intersection on the first hole. I hope this illustrates just what they are up against. Quite literally a needle in a haystack.

Here is a good discussion of McArthur River Mine.
