RE:RE:RE:NEXT STEP ?It is an incredible story. The two key Mongolian geologists, and Charlie Forster and Doug Kirwin at IVN have all written or given presentations/ memoirs. The tragic loss of the brilliant Hugo Dummett in a car accident took away his voice. The breakup of the Soviet Union, the financial pressures of a brutal bear market in metals on BHP, and the dramatic gambling and entrepreneurial sense of Robert Friedland all played a part, as did dozens of fascinating Mongolian personalities. And the full story hasn't unfolded yet.
And the foreign diplomats and spies buzzing in and out of UB - Russians, Chinese, Brits, Aussies, Americans, Indonesians, Japanese, Koreans, Canadians ... lots of skullduggery in the dark of night along the way.
Completely apart from the money and investment aspect it is a great example of how interesting it is to really dig into the details of great enterprises - truth is stranger than fiction here too.
Good luck to all on the Trans-Gobi Cannonball. As the Grateful Dead sang, "What a long, strange trip it's been." And we don't know how it works out in the end, yet.
