Yes and no. Yes was there no as today is no comparison to 81. We won't see Fed rates at 20% ! 

Higher debt levels, more cash per population in the system, higher productivity and more countries growing their economies taking up the slack.

One issue we do have today higher populations putting more strain on resources. 

1987 was brutal, although it was short resource stocks got hammered as they did in 2009. Most stocks I had in both those periods lost 80 to 90% of their value. Guess you can't get much worse than that ! So definitely not as concerned these days with resource companies.
