Malaysian Politics (and risk)Since we're all speculating about a bunch of different factors that affect our company, let's add the election/appointment of Anwar Ibrahim into the mix.
Here we have someone who seems to be prioritising "social justice and anti-corruption". Now, these two concepts are both standard leftist talking points and yet together constitute somewhat of an oxymoron. That worries me. I can imagine a scenario where we have here someone who is likely to look at tightening the thumbscrews on exactly the types of business that are lucrative and unpopular on the left, fossil fuels and mining chief amonst them.
What could that look like? All the pain that Marxists love to impose: oppressive taxes, burdensome nonsensical virtue-signalling environmental regulations, even beurocratic blackmail and just straight up destruction and theft. Then again, these are such critical industries to the Malaysian economy that maybe they'll be left alone - it would be insane to mess with them. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of insanity going around at the moment.
I don't know enough about the Malaysian political, economic, or business landscape to understand the implications. What about you guys? Any thoughts?
