Clean energyI drove around through Labrador 2 or 3 years ago. At the time the giant Muskrat Falls project was in progress. Upriver from the proposed dam the trees were being cleared and the future submerged areas being cleaned up. We stayed in Happy Valley for a few days. This project monitors mercury and other chemical levels very closely and Hydro Quebec does as well. Hydro Quebec has mercury data from the outset of the James Bay Project and closely monitors the effect on fish and the consumption of these fish. Isolated northern areas need jobs and access to the modern world. The high school graduation rate for First Nation teens is less than 50% versus other Canadians at over 90%. The trade offs have to be made and smart native groups negotiate for jobs and trade skills in return for allowing passage of pipelines or whatever. Switzerland has neat ways to produce hydro power with a minimum of natural disturbance. We can't all eat leaves and bark and ride around on donkeys. Tough decisions have to be made sometimes, particularly by native groups.
