What do Belgians drink? That's an interesting question... I guess it depends on things like preference, local customs, cultural or social backgrounds and influences or occasions.
We had immigration waves during the sixties and seventies where mostly people from Italy, Spain, Greece and later Turkey, Morocco came here to work. Usually in the coal mines in the east side of Belgium.
We also have quite a large community of Congolese people over here as well as Chinese, Indian and lots of others.
Living in a crucible of cultures also contributed to our favorite drinks. Besides plain water; coffee, tea, orange juice, apple juice, milk, kefir, ginger ale and soft drinks are all very popular over here.
Belgium is also quite renowned for its beer.
When my parents were kids for instance, it was custom to have a bottle of 'table beer' (from Piedbuf) on the table during lunch or diner. That beverage was safer to drink than water in those days and it contained only a small amount of alcohol, usually below 1%.
Piedbuf is now a part of AB InBev, one of the largest Belgian companies around. Table beer has been replaced by pure water nowadays and I must admit that I only buy table beer to make 'stoofvlees', or traditional Flemish stew. When it's served with
Belgian fries (the French had nothing to do with fries) I'm sure it will become one of your favorite dishes :)
