News

NewsGood afternoon,

The purpose of this email is to provide advance notice about the anticipated, federal impact assessment process for the Northern Road Link Project (the Project), as proposed by Marten Falls First Nation and Webequie First Nation (together referred to as “the Proponent”). The Project is subject to the Impact Assessment Act (IAA).

On January 16, 2023, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (the Agency) received an Initial Project Description for the Project from the Proponent. The Agency is currently conducting a 10-day conformity review to determine whether the Initial Project Description meets the requirements of the Information and Management of Time Limits Regulations under the IAA.

If required information is missing, the Agency would notify the Proponent and request that a revised Initial Project Description be submitted. Should the Agency accept the Initial Project Description, it would be posted on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry Internet Site and the 180-day planning phase of the federal impact assessment process would commence and you would be invited to participate in the comment period on the Initial Project Description. Your input would help to inform the decision by the Agency of whether an impact assessment is required for the Project.

For additional information about the impact assessment process, please see the impact assessment process overview on the Agency’s website at https://www.canada.ca/en/impact-assessment-agency/services/policy-guidance/impact-assessment-process-overview.html.

The Project
The Proponent is proposing the construction and operation, including maintenance, of an all-season multi-use public highway located in northern Ontario. As proposed, the Project would be about 117 to 164 kilometres long and cross the Attawapiskat River. It would connect the proposed Marten Falls Community Access Road and the proposed Webequie Supply Road. The highway would become part of a future all-season road network connecting mineral development activities in the Ring of Fire area to the provincial highway system at Nakina, Ontario.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Information submitted to the Agency to inform this project assessment may be posted online to the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry subject to certain exceptions related to privacy, security or confidentiality. The Agency’s Submission Policy (https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/evaluations/participation/conditionsdescribes what submitted information can be shared publicly, and what should remain private.
