Wouldn't those investors who believe in the viable future of Poet not deserve a reward for their recent supportive financing for a non-revenue company where this financing helps bridge Poet to the next level?

It has nothing to do with Poet friend, but it has everything to do with rewarding loyal recent investors.
Those in the secondary market cannot complain if they did not take part in this reasonable recent investment. How else does a developing company sustain itself on its path to reliable revenue? It has nothing to do with friends but everything to do with normal business in my opinion.
