FERC approves Freeport LNG cool down request

The US Federal Energy Regulatory (FERC) Commission today approved a request by the operators of the 2 Bcf/d (57mn m³/d) Freeport LNG terminal in Texas to take the first steps necessary to resume service.

Freeport can begin cooling down some piping and reinstate its boil-off-gas management system, a process that will take 11 days. Terminal operators will need to submit additional requests to restart service of Freeport's three liquefaction trains.

"Authorization will only be granted following the review of filed responses, a determination that the facilities are fit for service, and documentation that acceptable measures have been put into place to safely return the facilities to operation," according to the FERC approval.

The terminal must also meet US Coast Guard and US Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration requirements.

Freeport shuttered following an 8 June explosion. The shutdown of the terminal — and the subsequent delays to resuming service — crimped gas demand, leaving more supply available to pad storage injections, generate power or meet heating needs.
