RE:Will Telus become the " Brookfield " of telecoms ?I am not quite sure about the "Brookfield" reference as the two enterprises are so different. BN is well known for its superb performance in capital allocation; undoubtedly a well deserved reputation. Not surprising, since they seem to have almost unlimited access to fresh capital...i.e. folks like to send them their investment dollars. The BN model is also increasingly dumped on for its rapacious raidering approach, sweeping in on ailing businesses at their lows and dumping them for juicy profits asap.
Telus on the other hand is focused on providing products and services and IMPROVING them. Lately it has built its protfolio by venturing into new domains unlike any other major telecom that I am aware of. Much of the basic capex has been invested and we are all eagerly waiting to see them come to fruition. That takes time.
Coincidentally both BN & T report earnings tomorrow.
p.s. The remark about Telus being owners of choice real estate in major population centres reminded me that many companies ( grocery chains, Loblaws, Can. Tire etc) have done very well splitting off these assets as realty trusts. So, yes, another potential venue to enhance the bottom line.
Of late we have seen a preponderance of sellers that has pressured the s/p. I believe there are two primary reasons for this. Fear of rising interest rates. And fear fom a bulked up Rogers. I am persuaded that both these fears are exaggerated and yes, I use the term advisedly, "transitory".
