If Northland goes into offshore wind  in Canada, maybe with floating wind-farms. More expensive at the moment than fixed bottom types, but with less marine disturbance. On the west coast where sensitive ecosystems exist, placing turbines in deeper waters away from bird migration routes and fishing areas may be the way to go.

No noise disturbance on marine life, whereas with fixed bottom have to drive the monopiles into the sea bed. Also impact of earthquakes on the west coast will be greatly reduced. Wind speeds are greater also in deeper water. 

Still in its infancy, but eventually Northland will develop a floating wind-farm in Scotland.


In the US the push is on--Offshore wind, but make it float - POLITICO

14MW turbines on floating structures was unheard of a few years ago. Photo below of how such structures would look.
