RE:I have NO IDEA why Tesla would even consider You are right, better, cheaper alternatives are coming. 
They are already in experimental stage and in mere 20-30 years we may see their first major impacts.
Of course, Li batteries not even close in reaching their potentials and will stay with us along with alternatives. In 60-80 years Li may become irrelevant, but until then...
