European Cannabis Update Legalization of cannabisLauterbach is confident
03/14/2023 11:22 am German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has expressed confidence that the EU will approve his plans to legalize cannabis. He received "very good feedback" from the European Commission, said Lauterbach on Tuesday in Brussels before a meeting with EU counterparts. Due to concerns as to whether legalization would be in line with European law, Lauterbach had his project checked by the EU Commission.
Lauterbach announced that "in the next few weeks" a bill to legalize cannabis in Germany will be presented. "We will soon present a proposal that works, that is, that conforms to European law," said Lauterbach. The minister was optimistic that the proposal would reduce drug-related crime and make cannabis use safer. "We will achieve these goals," said Lauterbach.
The SPD politician presented key points for the legalization of cannabis in October. Among other things, these stipulate that the acquisition and possession of up to 20 to 30 grams should be exempt from punishment. Supply and distribution should only be permitted within a licensed and government controlled framework. Private cultivation should be allowed to a limited extent - three plants per person are planned.
