CFO is Gone?

CFO is Gone?Looks like the CFO has "retired".  My question is if the company knew he was retiring why wouldn't they have a plan in place to replace him?  It seems very sudden and now they have an executive search team looking for a replacement.  The legal counsel is  now the interim CFO.  I'm not sure how good a CFO a lawyer makes (their trained in law not accounting).  Also if the legal counsel does not have an accouting degree he can't sign off on financials.
