Tech job losses ytd

In the first 2 months, the tech industry has lost 63,216 jobs in the US compared to 187 jobs in the first 2 months last year. Across all industries a total of 180,713 jobs lost compared to 34,309 last year. It is worth noting that this is the highest total of job losses since Jan/Feb 2009. 


job losses according to industries in Jan + Feb : 

1) tech - 63,216 vs 187 last year 

2) retailers - 17,456 vs 761 

3) financials- 17,235 vs 1,148 

4) healthcare - 16,482 vs 8928 

5) media and news - 9,738 vs 3,774 

 

HIRING PLANS FALL

Companies announced plans to hire 28,830 workers in February, down 12% from the 32,764 hires announced in January. It is down 87% from the 215,127 hiring plans announced by companies in February 2022. So far this year, companies announced plans to hire 61,594 workers, the lowest January-February total since 2016, when employers planned to hire just 15,901 workers in the first two months of the year.
