RE:RE:RE:First LFP and now Sodium

RE:RE:RE:First LFP and now Sodium*main incremental demand in class 1 Ni (for other needs nickel pig iron can be used far more cheaply)
rkhosla wrote: Well of course it matters.  Yes, indeed there is nickel in windmills and solar panels and Javelin missiles as well.  But the main incrimental demand in Ni demand was to come from EVs.  LFP was said to lack density / range.  But people are realizing they don't need 500km range and now LFP eating our lunch - or large nibble from it anyway.  Co priced itself out and is being replaced/reduced.  Developers trying to do same with Ni (and Li).  For sure we remain dominant for next half-decade and in the mix after that, however as targets get more ambitious (like today's US announcement) cheaper alternatives will necessarily become dominant....

It doesn't matter. At present only 5% of nickel is used for batteries. The rest for steel and other alloys. Even if a new battery was made tomorrow  it wouldn't change the nickel supply demand equation and the fact nickel inventories are low. Nickel would miss out on future gains in demand for batteries but as long as the world continues to grow, so will the demand for nickel. Every is focused on battery nickel as the key driver of price. Way overblown when it's only 5% of nickel supply isn't it.  sherritt nickel is high purity. But they've been in business making it long before the first ev hit the streets
