Hydrogen can also be used as a way to store energy from intermittent renewable sources, which are intermittent -- the sun isn’t always shining and the wind isn’t always blowing. Instead, utilities can convert the excess energy into hydrogen and then use it for energy later on, as an alternative to battery storage. Hydrogen “can be stored underground for as long it needs to be, much the same as natural gas, and on a seasonal basis,” Jake Stones told CNBC.
