Professional traders and investors accumulate their positions over time, sometimes years, before they reach some turning point or catalyst when they flip the switch to distribution mode and start to sell that position back into the market. I cannot stress this enough. Expert equity traders simply do not buy and sell everything in one go. Instead, they buy in tranches over time—sometimes hours, sometimes months—and then, when ready, they distribute shares back into the market, also over a period of time, selling the position back in intervals.
I can’t begin to count how much money I’ve lost from not doing this properly and how well I’ve done when I accumulate and distribute more gradually and patiently. Trading is as much about patience as it is about execution.
