ATS, stands for alternative trading system. They were created by institutional traders and or our big banks, to avoid paying fees to the tsx. The tsx used to be a private company owned by those same trading desks and banks before it became a public profit driven company. There are many exchanges, not all of which , trade all stocks, every day. You can also check trading volume in the USA but the symbol is rarely the same as in Canada so you have to search using the full name, Stockwatch gives free basic quotes but 90%+ of all their features are only available to subscribers.
The ATS's trade the same stocks that are listed on the TSX, TSX Venture, CSE and NEO exchanges.
