A new visit to Sangdong Mine in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do, South Korea
Is mining a sustainable business in the future?
It was as if we were entering the future.
As a new employee of Almonty Korea Tungsten, I visited Sangdong Mine in Yeongwol for the first time. Sangdong mine can produce 10% of the world's tungsten supply.
Tungsten is a mineral that is used in various fields because it has almost diamond-like performance and good cost-effectiveness. Therefore, it is a strategic mineral that is essential for future industries such as smartphones, electric vehicles, secondary batteries, and the aerospace industry.
Before entering the Sangdong Mine, I received safety training from the safety manager of Almonty Korea Tungsten. In particular, visitors learned hand signals with lamps attached to helmets to communicate when dangerous situations arise in the dark mines. The inside of the gallery was a huge space that overwhelmed me more than I had imagined. These days, trucks and drilling equipment go in and extract target minerals, so it is said that the size of the tunnel is designated to transfer large-scale vehicles on two lanes.
In fact, it took a long time to dig tungsten with an excavator in the pit. I was in awe of the hard work of the engineers working in the pit.
It is said that tungsten is an essential resource for making semiconductors, which will be used throughout the sustainable industry in the future. I was able to vividly witness that the core resources leading to the future are now being developed at Sangdong Mine in Yeongwol, Korea.
