Let them eat cake.

Let them eat cake. The consequences of climate change will appear in global grain markets much sooner than most currently appreciate, and as extreme weather becomes more common and damaging, the world’s ability to feed its population will markedly decline along with the destabilization of armed conflict and mass migration.

“China’s prime wheat-growing region received a deluge of rain at the end of harvest.  Reuters reports that fields of ripe wheat in Henan province were flooded the week ending May 28. That province produced 28 percent of China’s wheat crop last year.”

“About one-third of China's wheat is grown in Henan province, earning it the nickname the granary of China. With roughly 30 million metric tons expected to be affected nationally by the rains, out of a forecast bumper crop for all of China of 137 million metric tons, the losses may mean rising grain imports into the world's biggest wheat consumer.”

About a third of the wheat across southern Henan has sprouted, said a harvester driver operating on a nearby farm who has worked his way north from Anhui province over the last week. He declined to give his name.

“For the last two years, a deep drought withered much of this prime wheat-producing region.  This year’s Kansas wheat harvest is shaping up to be the smallest since 1957, when the Eisenhower administration intentionally suppressed wheat production.  It’s much the same in Oklahoma. The crop is so poor, some farmers are dousing their measly crops with herbicide to contain their losses and collect insurance.”

SYDNEY, June 6 (Reuters) - Australia's production of winter crops is set to fall from record highs, with wheat output seen declining more than 30%, the country's agricultural department said, as forecasters predict dryness due to the El Nino weather pattern.  Australia is the world's second largest wheat exporter, supplying mainly to buyers in Asia, including China, Indonesia and Japan.
Total Australian winter crop production is forecast to fall by 34% to 44.9 million tonnes in 2023–24, around 3% below the 10-year average to 2022–23 of 46.4 million tonnes, according to the June crop report from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.”

And if the result of atmospheric warming wasn’t’ enough –
“Kakhovka dam will flood tens of thousands of hectares of agricultural land in southern Ukraine, the country’s agriculture ministry said. The disaster could leave more than 500,000 hectares without irrigation and could turn those fields into “deserts.”
