The Vanadium Redox Flow Battery
in the current form (V/V, dissolved in sulphuric acid) was patented in 1986. It had great potential at the time. 35 years later one would expect an allegedly "superior" technology to dominate the market. Far from it!. All I read about today is "potential", still.
VionX was founded in 2002 to commercialse the VRFB. 18 years later Largo picked up the pieces and formed Largo Clean Energy to try the same.
Number of batteries sold since inception of LCE: 1.
Number of batteries connected to the grid: 0.
Number of orders received after the sale to Enel: 0.
In 2021, during the infamous "battery day" Largo publicly laid out its expectations for the battery business:
"For 2022 we are looking at 40MWh/5MW8hrs ramping to 1.4GWh annually over that 5yr period"
The fact, however, is: 2022 sales amount to NIL.
1.4GWh equal 230 "Mallorca size" batteries. Most batteries supposed to be connected to the grid in 2025 must be ordered about now. How many follow-on orders did LCE receive as of today? None at all!
Quite obviously the plan laid out at battery day, is about to fail miserably.
